So what is a Life Coach?
Life coaching is a fairly new concept to Australians, so you may be wondering “what is a life coach and why do I need one”. A life coach can help you unhook from your mental and emotional limitations, develop empowering mindset skills and implement successful strategies so that you’re empowered to “do life” better.
Coaching itself is probably familiar and best understood in the arena of sports, business or career coaching where a client sets a vision and goals, and takes action to get there, under the guidance of a coach. Similarly, a life coach can help uncover and map out your personal vision, set goals, and be there for accountability and support. Life coaching can help you to make sense of your inner world, to gain clarity on your life direction and purpose, improve confidence and self-belief, while working through fear and self-doubt.
The foundation of my coaching approach, is doing the deep and inner mental work, because your mindset is the foundation of your life. Your mindset is the guiding force behind all the decisions you make, and the actions you have to take. Your beliefs, your thoughts, and your feelings (aka your mindset) determine what action (or lack thereof) you take on a daily basis.
Put simply: life coaching takes you from where you are,
to where you want to be
Firstly, let’s just start with the fact that you’re not inherently flawed, faulty or broken – you are whole and worthy, just as you are. You might just need some help in remembering the truth of who you are, and to clear away the limiting beliefs, thought errors, and faulty mental wiring that stand in the way of you living your ultimate potential.
No life coach has “the answer” for you, so steer clear of anyone that is promising you that they have all the answers. Everything you need is inside you, and what is right for someone else is not necessarily right for you. A good life coach will guide you inwards, to uncover your truth, inner wisdom, soul passion and heartfelt desires.
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
why work with a life coach?
You want space to be heard – You’re running in circles in your head and you want to be able to process your thoughts out loud, to someone who is neutral without a skewed or vested interest in the decision you make. Sometimes we hold off speaking our truth, fearing judgment, abandoment and ridicule from our friends and family. A coach can hold a supportive space where it is possible to tap into your inner wisdom, soul truth and purpose, and to dream big.
You have a bigger vision for your life – You want to step into the bigger vision that you hold for your life or your business, but it feels unfamiliar, scary and way out of your comfort zone. A life coach can literally coach you through the process of feeling the fear and doing it anyway, taking action in the direction of your dreams, and supporting you on the journey. Your dreams and visions were given to you for a reason, they’re part of your life’s journey and purpose, and deserve to be explored.
You’re craving “more”– You are currently restless and unfulfilled and have a nagging feeling that there’s got to be “more” to life. You might even have ticked all the boxes and “look great on paper”, but there’s a rising tide of discontent and unease that you just can’t shake. You want to explore possibilities, and entertain new realities in a safe and supportive environment with someone who has walked this path before. Life coaching is a holistic practice where the focus is on your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing, and how this applies to your relationships, health, career, and business.
You’re in a time of transition and growth – Perhaps you’ve been through a period of major transformation and change with your health, relationships or career and you are at a cross-roads and deciding what is next for you. You know you’re destined for something different and you’re wanting to uplevel and change your life, and need support and encouragement as your walk your new path.
(In 2012 when I was in the aftermath of my own life changing event, this was when I first sought out the services of a life coach – and it was life-changing!)
You want faster results – Life coaches are trained to help facilitate personal insight and breakthroughs. A coach can offer a fresh perspective and see the things that you’re not able to. When we are so caught up in our stories, that becomes our reality, and we can’t see the forest for the trees. With a coach you are encouraged to change your perspective, examine your limiting beliefs and push past your upper limits with accountability, motivation and support as you do so.
You’re self-sabotaging – Your patterns and behaviours are not in alignment with your goals and you need accountability and someone to call you out on your B.S. Often the reasons we’re self-sabotaging are hidden deeper within our psyche, and a coach can help you uncover these and rewrite some more supporting beliefs to have you taking inspired action in the direction of your goals.
Is life coaching the same as therapy?
While life coaching is not therapy, it can be therapeutic. Therapy or counseling often involves revisiting past events in order to make sense of your current situation. By contrast, life coaching is a transformational process grounded very much in the present moment, future-focused, outcomes-driven and action-oriented.
Life coaching can be life changing so as with any period of transformation, it’s likely that some uncomfortable thoughts and feelings might arise. This is a natural part of growth. Together we’ll look at any self-doubt, judgment, fears, internal criticism, unconscious programming or limiting beliefs that might arise. We’ll bring these into the bright light of awareness, and begin to transmute them so they won’t hold you back from manifesting your vision.
